?Public Health & the Corona virus

Unless I’m misunderstanding you, you’re suggesting that the government are making decisions to not do everything possible to protect the most vulnerable? Apologies if I have that wrong but either way, now that CV is happening I think the options open to governments are limited to managing the spread and therefore the levers they have to play with are also very limited.

Where I think the government is far more culpable is in allowing a population to become so unhealthy and poorly equipped (on an individual level) to deal with a nasty virus. I wouldn’t go so far as to say they’ve been encouraged but I would certainly say that the government and the “health system” do almost nothing to discourage people to make such poor lifestyle choices. People are conditioned to believe that they are the victims of poor health, suffering from chronic illnesses they could have done nothing to avoid and in 90%+ of cases that just isn’t so.

Start with the capitalist fueled stresses of modern life (money, work, status, etc.) taking a big toll on our mental and physical health. Add to that the sedentary-by-design existence that so many people strive for and a poorly regulated food industry driven by nothing other than convenience, efficiency and profit (even fresh produce is full of/covered in chemicals from factory farming). And let’s not forget our “health system” that is laser focused on league tables and so keeping people alive is far more important than keeping people healthy.

A healthier populous would cope far better with CV and all the future viral mutations and antibiotic resistant bugs that will inevitably come our way. It would also relieve the pressure on health systems allowing them to focus resources on those who have been less fortunate with their health.
