    ?Morality and Veganism

Yes, I’m happy to explain why I would refer to the animal rights movement as the animal rights industry. This is not unique and a number of people who cross paths with some of the more extremist elements of the vegan/animal rights movements also have adopted this phraseology.

The term may be considered derogatory but I think it exemplifies that a lot of those involved with animal rights actually make considerably good living out of these issues.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) are case in point. Huge amounts of money donated to these organisations do not go to the welfare of animals but to supporting the infrastructure of the organisation providing excellent salaries to directors and insuring they have decent pensions.

Charity Navigator (which is a website dedicated to looking at the effectiveness of charities) gave PETA and HSUS only 2 out of 5 stars. Full details below.

My personal suggestion to anybody who wants to give money to any charity that supports animal welfare is to investigate where that money goes. It is sometimes far better to give to local animal shelters and rescue centres then to large organisations with huge infrastructures and perhaps an underpinning allegiance to the animal rights ideology. As mentioned in my previous post animal rights and animal welfare are two entirely different things. Animal rights is a political ideology where as animal welfare is an empirical science.
